Role Summary

The Vice President US Legal will be responsible for leading a best-in-class US Legal function and providing effective legal counsel to senior leadership on key strategic and tactical company initiatives.  Reporting to the US Chief of Compliance & Legal, the VP, US Legal will be directly involved in risk identification and mitigation, complex business transactions, negotiating key contracts, and corporate governance in coordination with the company’s Global legal functions.  The ideal candidate will have a strong track record of effective cross-functional engagement and fostering a work environment where learning, innovation, respect, open communication, and teamwork are critical values.

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide timely, relevant, and practical legal advice to senior leadership to help protect the company’s interests while ensuring an appropriate balance of legal, ethical, and business considerations
  • Partner with the US Head of Ethics and Compliance and Legal to develop and implement a US Legal strategy that aligns with core business objectives
  • Provide executive oversight to a 13-person Legal team and lead its continuing evolution with a demonstrated commitment to employee development and empowerment
  • Develop a vision for a best-in-class, future-fit legal function that appropriately leverages technology
  • Actively engage as a member of the US Legal, Privacy, Ethics and Compliance Leadership Team
  • Participate as a senior US Legal representative on cross-functional teams and committees
  • Provide support in key regulatory areas including marketing, pricing, labeling, and other strategies
  • Proactively identify legal risks and opportunities associated with business-critical activities to help the organization manage risk effectively
  • Oversee corporate compliance, including HR policies, accounting standards and intercompany agreements and policies
  • Advise on US litigation strategies and management
  • Coordinate effectively with Global legal in areas including litigation, IP matters, contracting, and corporate governance as well as Global transactions and integration activities
  • Maintain effective, ongoing collaboration with Legal, Privacy, Ethics and Compliance leaders in areas including risk management, policies, training, and internal investigations
  • Coordinate efficient use of outside counsel and oversee and successfully manage the US Legal department budget

 

Education and Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school with an active license to practice law.
  • 15+ years of legal pharmaceutical industry experience counselling life sciences clients, in either an in-house role, in private practice or a combination of both.
  • Interpret procedures, regulations, and legal information to meet the needs of a variety of stakeholders
  • Manage complex legal matters and provide high-quality deliverables, including under tight timelines.
  • Work effectively across functions and at all levels in the organization and with external parties.
  • Direct leadership and team management experience with proven ability to organize, manage, develop, and lead legal teams in a dynamic environment.
  • Possess exceptional time management and communication skills, both oral and written with the ability to influence internal and external stakeholders
  • Accurately assess situations and provide options for effective resolution/solutions.
  • Engage with outside counsel and other external experts on applicable business initiatives and projects while maintaining financial efficiency.
  • Leverage new technologies to enhance personal and functional effectiveness

 

Travel and Location

  • 15% travel, including international
  • Boston-area based, hybrid role with a minimum of 2-3 days in the Boston office

Salary Range

The salary range for this role is $300,000-$358,000. An employee’s pay position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range may be modified in the future. Employees in this position are also eligible for Short-Term and Long-Term incentive programs.
