Role Summary
The Associate Director, US Emerging Portfolio Strategy (US EPS) and reports to Sr. Director of US EPS, who has responsibility for assessment of the developing pipeline and external (BD) opportunities within the Corporate Business Office (CBO) team.
The Associate Director US Emerging Portfolio Strategy will be responsible for helping to ensure that the business is best positioned to deliver on its strategy and business priorities for emerging products. This person will lead collaboratively through influence and direct, as appropriate, cross-functional project teams and be a trusted advisor/leader. The US EPS AD is responsible for owning and supporting major Emerging Portfolio Forum workstream deliverables and ensuring the recommendations to the Forum are strategic, clear and actionable.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Supports Senior Director US EPS in US Emerging Portfolio Assessments
- Support or lead US new product planning projects pre-commercialization – projects may range from preclinical to Phase 3 and include oncology and neurology
- In support of business development activities, may support assessment process for all external in-line and pipeline opportunities for all phases
- Contribute to the development of forward-looking strategies, market positioning and product profiles for pipeline/LCM/external opportunity products by synthesizing primary and secondary inputs that will inform the development and lifecycle plan of products / assets
- Collaborate with global teams to provide strategic US market insights (e.g. unmet needs, customer segmentation and insights, target product profile input, market potential, US competitive landscape considerations and risks)
- Create or support the market entry plan for potential new assets
- Proactively incorporate key market developments (both scientific and commercial) and changes in competitive landscape for key therapeutic areas/markets into assessment updates
- Collaborate with functional area experts to develop standardized best practices for all emerging portfolio forecasts & valuation assessments and lead stakeholders effectively
- Incorporate pipeline/LCM strategy in the medium to long term US strategic plans
- Supports Emerging Portfolio Forum, including:
- Sets meetings, agenda, and required attendance
- Validates in-scope deliverables and timelines for the Emerging Portfolio Forum which may include enterprise governance for optimizing our future growth eg LCM, BD, portfolio issues and trade-offs
- Supports the Chair in:
- Pressure-testing all deliverables ahead of submissions to global governance. These could include pipeline, LCM and BD assets ahead of DLL, Deal Committee, and other governance venues
- Providing regular updates to US leadership team and as needed for Global teams
- Analyzing and recommending portfolio tradeoffs ahead of strategic planning cycles
- Contributes to CBO Team Success
- Contributes to success of the CBO team by sharing best practices with other CBO members and support team offsites, events, developing and tracking annual team goals and budgets
- Coordinates with Emerging Portfolio Leader to share learnings and raise the bar for the group and organization
- Supports identification of opportunities for improved team effectiveness and collaboration, being an active contributor to the collaborative and transparent team culture
- Supports enablement of a strong culture of empowerment, accountability, teamwork and mutual trust and respect
Education and Required Skills
- Undergraduate degree with business, science, or quantitative focus
- Graduate degree (MBA, PhD, or similar) a plus
- 7+ years of work experience in a professional capacity, ideally in strategy consulting and biopharma strategy, BD, new product planning or related roles to be able to pressure test and synthesize deliverables for senior management
- Understanding of oncology, neurology or rare disease markets and stakeholder perspectives with a proven ability to quickly gain in-depth understanding of various disease states preferred
- Strong organizational, managerial and leadership skills (including influence without formal authority)
- Experience with leading cross-functional teams preferred
- Excellent social competencies, ability to work in highly matrixed organizations effectively
- Proven experience in developing and delivering client presentations/communications; exceptional written and oral communication skills especially in story telling
- Strong ability to establish a culture of excellence, accountability, teamwork, trust, and motivating groups
- Ability to work under pressure in fast paced environment and adaptability
- Experience in developing interpersonal relationships, influencing, and gaining consensus across multiple functions (high EQ)
- Professional and confident with an ability to work with all levels of the organization, especially senior level leaders
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with comfort preparing research and data analysis to support business recommendations

Other Relevant Information
- Boston-area onsite, 2-3 days in the office
- Travel ~10% of the time for meetings/workshops with Global (Paris), external conferences, and internal meetings/off-sites
