Role Summary
This Accounting Director role is an excellent opportunity for a finance leader who is eager to drive financial excellence in a growing organization. We are seeking an experienced Accounting Director with strong technical accounting expertise, a proven track record in financial consolidations, and experience in the manufacturing industry. Reporting to the Controller, this individual will lead accounting professionals, ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, drive financial integrity, and support strategic decision-making. As a member of the Finance Leadership team this role will be required to provide valuable input into the US Finance functional strategy as well as drive enterprise projects locally and with global colleagues. The ideal candidate has strong experience in the pharmaceutical or life sciences industry, is solutions-oriented, works with an enterprise mindset, and is well-versed in GAAP, IFRS, compliance, and financial controls.
Primary Responsibilities
Accounting Operations & Compliance
- Lead and own the day-to-day, monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, ensuring all deadlines are met.
- Leadership for the general ledger activities, accounts payable, expense reimbursement, payroll, revenue recognition, cost accounting, inventory and manufacturing workflow and valuation, tax, internal controls, bank reconciliations, and treasury functions.
- Lead the preparation and oversight of all financial statements in compliance with US GAAP and IFRS.
- Serve as the primary contact and accountable partner with external auditors to facilitate annual audits, providing all required schedules, reconciliations, and documents.
- Ensure compliance with tax regulations, including corporate income tax, sales tax, and transfer pricing.
- Develop, implement, and enforce accounting policies and procedures to ensure the efficient and accurate operation of the accounting department with sound internal controls.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to support R&D, manufacturing, and commercial operations from a financial perspective.
- Ownership of successful management of all intercompany transactions and allocation methodologies.
- Ownership of complete processes of all physical inventories and material cycle count adjustments.
- Treasury & Cash Management: Including cash flow forecasting, working capital, and liquidity management.
- Continuously review and enhance financial policies, procedures, internal controls, and systems to align with best practices and evolving business needs.
- Execute and ensure compliance of key internal controls; consistently review current controls to determine adequacy and sufficient design.
- Champion innovative approaches to accounting processes, driving automation and system improvements to enhance accuracy, streamline workflows, shorten the monthly close cycle, and improve reporting timelines while fostering a culture of continuous improvement within the accounting team.
- Establish and refine operational KPIs and benchmarks, driving transparency and accountability throughout the organization while continuously exploring opportunities for process optimization and resource allocation.
- Perform technical accounting research and provide technical guidance for non-standard transactions such as leases, asset impairment, etc., by documenting memos as needed.
- Coordinate with external tax advisors to manage tax planning, compliance, and reporting.
- Support the integration of potential acquisitions
Strategic Financial Management
- Providing insights and recommendations based on financial analysis and key business drivers.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes.
- Assess and implement systems and tools to improve financial efficiency and reporting.
- Analyze financial risks and opportunities to support corporate strategy and growth initiatives.
Enterprise and People Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and continue to develop our high-performing accounting team.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement within the finance function.
- Drive cross-departmental collaboration to support strategic initiatives and improve financial literacy and compliance across the organization.
- Represent the Finance function as a key contributor to enterprise-wide projects and initiatives.
Education and Required Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- A Certified Public Accounting (CPA) designation is required.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with previous successful experience in a leadership role.
- Prior experience in the pharmaceutical, biotech, or life sciences industry is required.
- Strong knowledge of US GAAP, IFRS, compliance, and financial controls.
- Experience with ERP systems (SAP, NetSuite).
- ERP implementation experience is a plus
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, evolving environment while managing multiple priorities.
- Strong analytical, leadership, and communication skills.
- Knowledge of manufacturing cost accounting and inventory management in the pharma industry.
- Knowledge of government pricing, rebates, and compliance reporting in pharmaceuticals.
- Exceptional leadership and team management skills, with a track record of developing high-performing teams.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively.
Travel and Location
- Hybrid role; 2-3 days onsite in Boston Seaport
